Three Eagerly Awaited Novels

Half a Crown coverMy Chronicle column has been posted at SFGate.com and will appear in tomorrow’s print edition. It covers three books by writers whose work I always look forward to.

I wasn’t familiar with Jo Walton’s fiction before I started hearing the buzz around “Farthing,” but her trilogy about a fascist Britain is one of the best exercises in alternate history I’ve encountered.

I’ve been reading Neil Gaiman since he took over the “Miracleman” comic from Alan Moore. I debated whether I should include his latest YA novel in my regular column, but I ultimately decided that “The Graveyard Book” has sufficient appeal to attract audiences of all ages.

As for Jonathan Carrol, his “The Land of Laughs” remains one of my very favorite fantasy novels, and I’ve read practically everything he’s published since then. His latest, “The Ghost in Love,” doesn’t rank among his very best, but it’s worth checking out if you haven’t yet encountered Carroll’s singular take on life and the hereafter.
