Oscar Villalon Lights Out for the Territories
San Francisco Chronicle books editor (and champion thumb-wrestler) Oscar Villalon is taking a buyout from the company, and his last day in the office will be tomorrow. I won’t be there to wish him bon voyage in person, but I at least want to note his departure here.
I’ve worked with Oscar for 10 years, and he’s always been a consummate pro: personable, thoughtful, engaged, eclectic in his tastes. He pretty much gave me free rein to cover whatever in science fiction and fantasy caught my interest, and I thank him for that. He leaves the Books section in the capable hands of deputy editor Regan McMahon, but his absence will be felt by everyone who works at Fifth & Mission (though our numbers are steadily shrinking).
